The St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council sponsored a poster competition among K-12 students throughout the county to celebrate Earth Day, April 22nd. Over 530 students submitted posters on the theme "EMC: Everybody Must Care — For the Environment!" Posters were submitted from students attending Canton, Edwards-Knox, Gouverneur, Hammond, Massena, Norwood/Norfolk, Parishville-Hopkinton and Trinity Catholic schools.
The award-winning posters and those which received "Honorable Mention" recognition will be on display at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall (in the corridor near T.J. Maxx) until Memorial Day. Ronald J. Patnode, Director of Marketing for the mall said, "We are thrilled to be able to show to residents of St. Lawrence county just how creative their children are. St. Lawrence Centre was very happy to sponsor the grand prize for this Earth Day Poster Competition."
Prizes were awarded for first, second and third place in each of three categories (K — 6; 7 — 8; 9 — 12), and also for "Best in Show". St. Lawrence Centre Mall contributed $100 in gift certificates to the poster awarded "Best in Show". St. Lawrence University Bookstore donated $50 gift certificates to the first place winners in each category. Second-place winners will receive $25 prizes, while third-place winners will get $10 each. Sponsors for second and third place awards include the Norwood Lake Association, the St. Lawrence County Water Quality Coordinating Committee, Judith Little and Diane Church (EMC members), and Planning Office staff.
